Opening in Mexico City
Trees shrivel smog shrouded in earthquake dust.
Urchins beg on the street,
"pesos por favor."
In Mexico City -
Conquered land of conquering peoples,
where Gods face all ways.
It was here I met you,
Forces unseen
that I had journeyed to encounter.
But not this suddeness -
Not this vioence.
I did not expect such a welcome,
such a death.
You met me
Driving a javelin through my back
into my heart,
so that I was afraid of death.
Would there be courage in my dying?
Yet it passed
and as the fear was thrown away,
it dawned on my troubled Mind
that this was the death of before.
Not an attack
Just an opening.
This death in Mexico City
Your gift.
